Hazardous chemical management involves the systematic handling, storage, transportation, and disposal of
dangerous substances to minimize risks to human health and the environment. It's a critical process that extends
from the procurement of chemicals to their ultimate disposal, ensuring safety throughout their lifecycle. It
involves legal frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure the safe handling, storage, use, and disposal of
chemicals that pose risks to health and the environment. In Malaysia, key legislation includes the Occupational
Safety and Health (Classification, Packaging and Labelling of Hazardous Chemicals) Regulations 1997, and the
Occupational Safety and Health (Use and Exposure Standards of Chemicals Hazardous to Health) Regulations
2000. These regulations, along with other relevant acts and guidelines, aim to protect workers and the
environment from the harmful effects of hazardous chemicals. Currently, the manufacturing sector is the major
contributor in hazardous waste generated in Malaysia. Other sectors that contribute include household,
agriculture, medical, and other industrial sectors.
